Set Design Duo Isabel + Helen (Isabel Gibson and Helen Chesner, Graphic designers from Chelsea College of Art)
"If people are coming to an exhibition, there should be something exciting for them to engage with," says Isabel Gibson. I inspired by their playful exhibition designs, from graphics through to space...

Traditional Japanese Screens
Electra prepared this presentation from our (Saph and I) discussions and design development to present to the rest of the curation crew... I came up with the folded screen display structure inspired by Japanese screen designs shown above. I think this would encourage the audience to move around and interact with the images displayed, rather then just presenting the work on a completely flat surface. I also think this screen would give flexibility to each individual student showing work, the screen can be folded to create corners and separate sections depending on the form of the work.
Mood Boards I made these mood boards after a meeting with Saph and Electra. We spent a day looking for inspiration for display systems, looking at form, colour and material. We discussed the idea of creating an environment which encouraged people to relax and explore, we are planning to influence this through the design of the structures. I really liked the idea of having black powder coated structures, but we decided it's better to utilise the existing structures in the studio and not disrupt there appearance. I am keen to resurface the white structures with wood, and also create pieces solely made from wood. I think that it gives a more wholesome, welcoming appeal to an exhibition space, and I think it's important to incorporate natural contents into the design, to avoid the clinical atmosphere.
I like the idea of creating structures inspired by the patterns workshop which the graphics team conducted. The graphics material needs to be coherent with the design of the structures to create a strong visual identity, which can continue throughout our social media presence and new designers.
Patterns Workshop held by the Graphics curation team..
This project aimed to encourage the year group to participate in the design of the exhibition. The idea was to form patterns and mark making which was directly inspired from the studio space and Norwich. Taking the forms, shapes, textures of our congregative space as a year group, turning them into 2D graphic designs. The outcomes from the workshop were amazing, there was so much diversity and creativity in the mark making. We are starting to draw out shapes from these patterns to inspire our design of the display systems.
