13/03/17 Feedback from Ba3b Proposal : This tutorial encouraged me to question what I wanted to communicate through the installation. I am interested in raising and expressing a current issue which can a large audience could strongly relate to, such as racism, identity, feminism, overpopulation. Although I am interested in doing this, I am still fascinated by environmental psychology and the effects of our surroundings on our wellbeing, so I am looking for a concept which can connect to this area of research. I am hoping to find a poetic text which brings in a current issue and describes it in an atmospheric, abstract form. I would like to illustrate a poem because it quickly sets a mood in a confined piece of text. This allows me to effectively respond creatively in order to create visuals which interpret an issue loosely, allowing the audience to interpret it more freely rather then making a strong statement which forces the audience to react. I find poetry more inspiring because of the artistic way it is written. When I create an environment I like to have something which I can work from, poetry gives me that non-physical environment to interpret and recreate.
People to look at: Christian Boltanski - An installation artist who uses installation to remind people of the lost and forgotten issues, people, and tragedies; for example the mass murder of jews by the Nazis.Verner Panton - Denmark's most influential 20th-century furniture and interior designers. The spaces he creates are playful and weird. I am interested in his use of form, he uses curves extensively, and his use of colour, matching bold colours. How can art transform into design? Daniel Libeskind - An architect, artist, professor and set designer. I am interested in how he communicates concepts through functional design. Books to read: George Perec - Species of Space Brian Dillon - In the Dark Room
George Mellor - Poetry I talked to George about my interests in light, detail, atmosphere, interior spaces, architecture, emotions, and identity of space. She shared some poetry books with me that helped to form my ideas:
Barbara Guest Shazea Quraishi 'In Praise of Shadows' by Junichiro Tanazaki
I have elaborated on these poets in my Inspiration - Research section and also my Practice page.
I am interested in the idea of constructing my own narrative out of existing poetry, in order to communicate something specific to my interests rather than responding to someone else's existing narrative. This give me more control over what I am trying to communicate.
I am continuing to collaborate with Alice Greenwood Bliss from UEA as I love working with her poetry.
After playing with poetic text it was clear that I wanted to communicate the concept of identity, comparing a person's identity to the changing identity of space. I was playing with narratives which explored the character of identity and how you could compare the feeling of having your identity challenged to the natural environment and mundane surroundings.
24/04/2017 Second Tutorial Ba3b At this tutorial I had the imagery and sequence for my film, but it hadn't been edited to the rhythm of the poem. I had also create the structure for my installation and was at the stage of playing with spatial positioning and the input of objects to play with the projection. The film derived from my constructed poem about the identity of space.
What I need to think about? Think about how your narrative text can translate to the film? There could be varying methods of integrating the poem into the film either through typography or spoken word. This would need to work in tandem with the tone of the poems.
I am also at the stage where I am deciding how to document the installation, whether I exhibit it in the degree show or whether I film the installation and show this documentation in the show. I am looking at how Anne Harild documents her installations.
