Documenting the movement of light through an interior space in response to a collaborative project with a creative writer from UEA. The poem used the description of the movement of light to communicate her changing moods and thoughts. As the movement of light speeds up it begins to create a panicked and frantic atmosphere. As the temperature of the light rises, so does the intensity of her thoughts. I used photoshop to enhance the colours and boldness of the photographs into order to effectively communicate the rhythm and pace of Alice's emotions in the connected poems, 'Room' and 'Box'.
Whilst documenting the movement of light I also began to notice the power of objects in illustrating the concepts within the poem. In 'Room' particularly, Alice personifies the room in order to portray it's connection to her. As I was taking these photographs I began to look for qualities in the structure, form, and textures of the interior which resembled human qualities. For example, the photographs of the sink illustrate the 'With swollen teeth and swollen eyes and swollen all.' The smooth surface of the sink reminded me of bruised skin, the bulges in the sinks' form like the puffiness of a swelling.
I have created a sequence of these final images edited to the rhythm and pace of the poem (above). I was inspired by Tacita Dean's split screen films, they create an interesting sense of the progression of time, and movement. I experimented with my photographs creating a split screen film. There are three parts to the spit screen. Each part has a specific colour which symbolises a mood within the poem. The colours are yellow, red and blue.
Yellow is for the positive references to light Red is for the personification of the room and human comparisons Blue is for the cold, negative emotions.
The rhythm of the changing emotions within the poem was illustrated by these colours.
