It is interesting that the Cafe used the lights in their interiors as a brand image, making a link between the physical space and the brand identity (the window also acts as the logo). 'The ability to quickly interpret the restaurant environment helps patrons make the commitment to enter the establishment more readily. Well-defined entrances and convenient drop-offs bring customers quickly and easily into the space.' K.A Robson, S. There is a lot of clutter and colour in this Cafe, the playful use of interior decoration adds to the creative vibe in this space, and takes away the formality and restriction of being in a public space. Over the bar there were scattered skylights which gave a backdrop lighting to the warm artificial mood lighting. This Cafe was full of stimulating aesthetics such as the artwork, the bottles displayed behind the bar, the plants, skylights, mood lighting, TV, hard floors and surfaces reverberating the sounds within the space. All these elements were enticing. The big window at the front of the Cafe lit up the space, the natural light combined with the warm orange artificial light created a soothing and intimate ambience in such an empty space. The ambience of the Cafe is clearly seeable through from the street, which is what caught my attention as I was walking by. The use of green plants and wood in the Cafe definitely enhanced the soothing ambience, if the bars were made of an artificial material such as plastic, the space would feel less comforting to me, the natural elements enforce the restorative environment setting. 'Hard finishes on furnishings and floors also contribute to a higher degree of arousal through increased sound, as music and noise bounce off these surfaces and reverberate through the space.' K.A ROBSON, S Space needs light to illuminate; light needs space to receive it, light within the space changes human experience.

I interviewed my friend Ella in this Cafe, her favourite space in the city. I thought it was interesting interviewing Ella in this cafe because it’s a familiar place to her, she has repeatedly been there, and when I started asking her questions she began to look at the cafe in much more detail, and thought about what this cafe provides her in a sense of comfort, steadiness, familiarity, social contact. Interviewing her in this space allowed her to be able to look around and before answering the questions it wasn’t just from memory, it was her response to the environment at the point in time. Here are some interesting words she said: “The smokiness adds to the charm of the place.” “In a world that’s drifting away from connection, and people talking face to face for me it’s really nice to come here, and see people who are always working and always happy.” “I like how the ketchup bottles are tomatoes.” “Spaces are about who you are with, that changes your perception of the space.” 'More and more, so it seems to me, light is the beautifier of the building.' FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT 'Color not only can affect people's perceptions and attitudes but can actually elicit a biological response.' K.A Robson, S. 'The choice of materials for walls, floors, ceilings and furniture play an essential role in interior design. Their surface, texture and colour have a decisive impact on the atmosphere of the space.'
Schittich, C. 'Hard seating materials and seats with upright backs can be designed to be inviting to sit in but discouraging to long stays' K.A ROBSON, S. (N.D.) TURNING THE TABLES “Deep overhanging eaves, alcoves and recesses, the withdrawal of the house in the dense foliage, and the cave-like masses of stone anchoring the house to the hill all convey that this is a haven within which one can withdraw secure.’ (Joye, 2007) 'Space and light and order. Those are the things that men need just as much as they need bread or a place to sleep' LE CORBUSIER, 1965 'Creating pools of light to highlight aspects of an environment is a favourite technique of restaurant designers. Often tabletops are spotlit to suggest a defined "territory" at each table' K.A Robson, S. (n.d.) Turning the Tables The change in flooring under this table gave the seating a territorial quality,it marked the corner and visually separated it from the rest of the Cafe space. Flooring is common element used in interior architecture to mark the transition between spaces.
The Cafe used a diversity of textures and materials such as metal, wood, tiles. I gave the space more visual depth and richness, making the atmosphere more authentic, this unevenness and roughness made me feel more relaxed. This Cafe was vibrant and busy, which I liked because it's sociable and more stimulating compared to a quiet Cafe. The nature incorporated in the decoration was calming, the space had a den like quality of the branch hanging above our heads and the objects on display. This authenticy formed a very creative, playful ambience. Environmental Psychology suggests that bringing nature indoors reduces stress and anxiety. The lack of nature in Urban environments can be helped by having plants and pictures of nature indoors, it can have the same affect as being in a natural environment. It also increases our level of attention which is why having plants in work environments can be hugely beneficial. ‘Humans are social creatures; in most cases, we prefer and actively seek out the company of others.' |
